From yōlqui (“living being”) + tlaxcalli (“bread”), a calque of Spanish pan de vida, calqued from Latin panis vitae, calqued from Ancient Greek ἄρτος τῆς ζωῆς (ártos tês zōês, “bread of life”), taken from the Bread of Life Discourse in the Gospel of John, 6:22–59.
