Inherited from Ottoman Turkish یاساق (yasak), یاساغ (yasağ), from Middle Mongol ᠵᠠᠰᠠᠭ (ǰasag) whence Mongolian засаг (zasag, “rule, power; law”)). By surface analysis, yasa- + -k.
Cognate with Tatar ясак (yasaq), Chagatai یاساق (yāsāq /yasaq/, “tribute; decree, law”), Bashkir яһаҡ (yahaq, “historical tax in Russia”), Kazakh жасақ (jasaq). The following are borrowed from Turkic: Middle Armenian ասախ (asax), Russian яса́к (jasák), Persian یاساق (yâsâq).
