Inherited from Proto-Algonquian *wi·ʔsaka·xkwa. By surface analysis, wisahkël (“sour, bitter”) + -akw (“tree”).
Cognates in several languages, with varying suffixes. Ojibwe wiisagi-mitigomizh (“red oak”) literally /sour-oak/.
Cognate with Mohegan-Pequot wisacumus, Malecite-Passamaquoddy asahqahatoq.
