From Proto-West Germanic *wilþiʀu, the plural of Proto-West Germanic *welþ, from Proto-Germanic *welþaz (oblique *wilþiz-), from the same root as Proto-Germanic *wilþijaz (“wild”). Cognate with Old High German wild (dative plural wildiran), whence modern German Wild (“game”).
