From Ukrainian ві́дділ (víddil, “part, section; a military unit”) + -arz, from Ukrainian Самооборонні кущові відділи (Samooboronni kuščovi viddily) (Self-defense Kushch Units), as the Self-defense Kushch Units was one of the Ukrainian militant groups that took part in mass killings of Polish people in the 1940s, influencing the use of this term to refer to Ukrainians.
