From Proto-Polynesian *paka-qasu, from Proto-Oceanic *paka-qasu, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *paka-qasu, an affixed form of *qasu. Cognates include Tongan fakaʻahu and Samoan fāʻasu. By surface analysis, whaka- (causative prefix) + reduplication of au (“smoke”).
