Adams suggests that the term likely reflects Proto-Indo-European *worKo-, itself probably formed from the zero-grade of the root Proto-Indo-European *wreg- (“track, hunt, follow”), whence also perhaps Latin urgēre (“to be urgent”), Hittite [script needed] (ūrki-, “track”), Sanskrit व्रजति (vrájati, “to go, walk, move”). Alternatively, the term has been suggested to derive from a root *werǵ- or *werḱ- (“desire”). According to the latter theory, the term could follow a similar semantic development as Latin vēnor. === Noun === werke ? hunt, hunting chase === References === Adams, Douglas Q.
