=== Etymology ===
Attested since the 16th century. Cognate with Westphalian Low German wiëmeln, Middle High German wimelen (hapax, 13th c.), whence German wimmeln. All forms require a Proto-West Germanic *wimilōn, but the late attestations make it difficult to reconstruct such a form. Ultimately related with Old High German wimmen, Old Saxon wemmian (“to gush, sputter, bubble”).
