=== Etymology ===
From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *wahiʀ, compare Malay air. Cognate with the Bukidnon languages (including Binukid and Panobo wahig (“water; river”)) spoken by the neighboring Higaonon and Binukid-speaking populations of northern and central Mindanao. It represents an archaic, deep-register regional variant that has largely been replaced in standard urban Cebuano by the downstream variant suba.
