From Proto-Finnic *vookra (compare Karelian vuokra, Ludian vuogr; no more cognates are known), borrowed from Proto-Germanic *wōkraz (“interest; usury, gain; increase”), or alternatively a more recent borrowing from Middle Low German wôker.
