From Middle Dutch vlugge, from Old Dutch *fluggi, from Proto-West Germanic *flugi, from Proto-Germanic *flugjaz, related to *fleuganą (“to fly”), whence Dutch vliegen. Cognate with Ripuarian flögg (“fast”), Middle Low German vlügge, German flügge (both “full-fledged”). Compare also German flugs (“quickly”).
