From Proto-Baltic *wirš-, from Proto-Indo-European *werǵʰ-, from the stem *wer- (“to bend”). The original name apparently made reference to the small bushes of this plant, full of little bent, twisted branches. Cognates include Lithuanian vi̇̀ržis, vi̇̀ržės, Proto-Slavic *versъ, *verzъ (Russian ве́рес (véres), ве́реск (véresk), Belarusian ве́рас (vjéras), Ukrainian ве́рес (véres), Czech vřes, Polish wrzos).
