Derived from Proto-Finnic *vila (whence also vilahtaa) + -istä. Cognate with Ingrian vilissä, Karelian vilissä, and the same root is also found in Estonian vile (“quick, swift”), Livonian vi’llõ (“to zip, go past in a blur”).
