Inherited from Proto-Finno-Ugric *walke (compare Finnish valkea, Estonian valge, and Northern Sami vielgat). Sense 1 is a semantic loan from Slavic, which displaced the original meaning illumination. Compare Romanian lume and Old Church Slavonic свѣтъ (světŭ). First attested in the 12th c. Doublet of virág.
