The gender of the expression "viertel+noun" is the gender of the noun.
Unlike the construction halb zwei (“half past one, one-thirty”), constructions like viertel zwei and dreiviertel zwei are restricted to the eastern and southern parts of the German-speaking area, and may not be understood elsewhere. In the remaining parts of the German-speaking area, the usual constructions are Viertel nach eins (“quarter past one”) and Viertel vor zwei (“quarter to two”).
