vete- (“water”) + -y. Coined in 1851, probably inspired by Swedish väte (in terms of phonology) and German Wasserstoff (with Wasser (“water”)).
(meat pie): Coined by Finnish entrepreneur Taimi Laakko in 1962 in reference to vetypommi (“hydrogen bomb”) after earlier atomi.
