From Proto-Finnic *veci, from Proto-Uralic *wete. Cognates include Finnish vesi, Hungarian víz. May ultimately be a cognate of Proto-Indo-European *wódr̥, in which case compare to Scottish Gaelic uisge, Irish uisce, Russian вода́ (vodá), English water.
