Inherited from Old Spanish berguença, from Latin verēcundia, from verēcundus (“feeling shame”), from vereor (“to respect, revere, fear”). Doublet of vergüeña, a now obsolete synonym which followed a different evolution path from the same Latin term, and the rare borrowing verecundia.
