vereiteln

التعريفات والمعاني

== German == === Etymology === Formally continuing Middle High German verītelen (“to become weak, insipid”, a 14th-c. hapax). By surface analysis, eitel (“vain”) +‎ ver- -en. In Early Modern German, it is attested for “to empty, deplete”. The contemporary sense has been in use since the 18th c. While it can easily be explained from the underlying adjective, it should be noted that the same sense was well established in Middle Dutch already by the 15th c., so influence by Dutch verijdelen is possible. === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /ferˈaɪ̯təln/, [fɐˈʔaɪ̯.tl̩n], [fɛɐ̯-] Hyphenation: ver‧ei‧teln === Verb === vereiteln (weak, third-person singular present vereitelt, past tense vereitelte, past participle vereitelt, auxiliary haben) (higher register) to thwart, foil Synonyms: durchkreuzen, torpedieren, zum Scheitern bringen, zunichte machen; abwenden, unterbinden, verhindern, verhüten ==== Conjugation ==== ==== Derived terms ==== === Further reading === “vereiteln” in Uni Leipzig: Wortschatz-Lexikon “vereiteln”, in Digitales Wörterbuch der deutschen Sprache‎[1] (in German) “vereiteln” in Duden online
