From Proto-Finnic *vasta (compare Estonian vast, Livonian vastõ, Votic vassõ), from Proto-Finno-Permic *wasta (“a place opposite or across”) (compare Northern Sami vuostá (“towards, against”), Erzya вастомс (vastoms, “to meet”), Moksha васта (vasta, “spot, place”), Eastern Mari ваштареш (vaštareš, “against”)). Unrelated to vasta (“bath broom”).
