Probably derived from the now dialectal adjective vana (“straight”), which is from the noun. Has a relationship similar to *tana (“straight”) (tanassa) ~ tanakka (“stocky, sturdy, strong”). Variants include vanea, vanakka, vankea. Compare tankka for standard tanakka. Related to Karelian vankka.
