== Finnish == === Etymology === vaali (“election”) +‎ avustaja (“assistant”) === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /ˈʋɑːliˌɑʋustɑjɑ/, [ˈʋɑ̝ːliˌɑ̝ʋus̠ˌtɑ̝jɑ̝] Rhymes: -ɑjɑ Syllabification(key): vaa‧li‧a‧vus‧ta‧ja Hyphenation(key): vaali‧avus‧ta‧ja === Noun === vaaliavustaja assistant (US) (person assigned to assist disabled persons to cast their vote in an election) ==== Usage notes ==== In Finland each polling station is required by law to have available at least one vaaliavustaja - a person assigned with the task of providing neutral assistance to those who for some reason are unable to fill in the ballot themselves. Also practically anyone selected by the disabled voter, except a candidate or a candidate's close relative may assist in similar way. The translation of this term into English is not straightforward as "election assistant", "voting assistant" or "polling assistant" in many jurisdictions means a person that helps in overall carrying out of the election process: verifying the right to vote, administering ballots, counting votes etc. Also, a similar position may not exist in other jurisdictions. In the US, for example, if the assistant is not chosen by the voter, two precinct election officers, one from each party, must perform the task together. The assisting person is simply called "assistant". ==== Declension ==== ==== See also ==== vaalivirkailija === Further reading === “vaaliavustaja”, in Kielitoimiston sanakirja [Dictionary of Contemporary Finnish]‎[1] (in Finnish) (online dictionary, continuously updated), Kotimaisten kielten keskuksen verkkojulkaisuja 35, Helsinki: Kotimaisten kielten tutkimuskeskus (Institute for the Languages of Finland), 2004–, retrieved 4 July 2023
