From Proto-Finnic *uuci, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *wuďe. Cognates include Estonian uus, Northern Sami ođas, Erzya and Moksha од (od), Komi-Zyrian выль (vyľ) and Hungarian új. The vowel was irregularly lengthened possibly as a result of the lost initial *w-.
