The spelling ung'a is preferred by Maquista Chapado (2004), however unga with no apostrophe seems to be dominant in literature, and is also the spelling preferred by the group Dóci Papiaçám di Macau.
The apostrophe is used to prevent pronunciation as /ˈuŋɡa/, although some speakers nonetheless pronounce it as such.
