Cognates include Old Church Slavonic оумѣти (uměti), Russian уме́ть (umétʹ), Czech uměti. Compare Slovene umetnost and Czech umělec (“artist”). Meaning "artist" was likely developed under the influence of German Künstler, derived from German Kunst (“art”), which is ultimately derived from German können (“to be able”).
