Related to Low German Ilk, German Iltis, of uncertain origin. Possibly from el- (“reddish, brownish”) + a word for "stench" found in wezel (“weasel”); or, possibly from ellende (“strangeness, misery”) + the suffix -iso, -wiso, meaning "strange being." Also compare Old English el- (“strange, else, other”).
