From Proto-Finnic *tutka + -ia, from Proto-Uralic *tuďka (“tip, end”), probably originally meaning "to prod, goad". The original root *tutka can more clearly be seen in tutkain; modern Finnish tutka (“radar”) is a more recent back-formation.
