From the present participle of Proto-Germanic *þrōwōną, whence also Old Norse þróask, þróast, and Norwegian troast (“to thrive”). The proposed Proto-Norse ancestor is *þrōwendīʀ m pl (< Proto-Germanic *þrōwōną + *-ndz), cf. Old English Þrōwendas pl. A similar construction is found in the plural bønder (“farmers”) of bonde, which is also from a present participle. The singular form of trønder is lost today, and -o- is only found in the compound Trondheim.
