From Proto-Finnic *torvi (compare Estonian tõri, Karelian torvi, Veps torv), from earlier *towri, borrowed from Proto-Baltic [Term?] (compare Latvian taure (“bugle”)), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *táwros. In Balto-Finnic, a metathesis *wr > *rw (> *rv) has occurred (compare järvi, karva). Doublet of Taurus, tarvas, and teuras.
