IPA(key): /ˈtoːnə(n)/
Hyphenation: to‧nen
Rhymes: -oːnən
=== Etymology 1 ===
From Middle Dutch tônen, from Old Dutch *tōnen. Cognate with Middle Low German tônen, Middle High German zounen, zōnen.
Probably a byform of synonymous Middle Dutch tôghen, cognate with Old Saxon tōgian, Old High German zougen, Gothic 𐌰𐍄𐌰𐌿𐌲𐌾𐌰𐌽 (ataugjan), derived from Proto-Germanic *augô (“eye”). The lack of -g- may be due to Grammatischer Wechsel or later contraction. The fact that some consonant originally preceded -n- is evidenced by the High German variant zounen (with lack of pre-alveolar monophthongisation).
