Cognate with Middle Low German tônen, Middle High German zounen, zōnen. Probably a byform of synonymous Middle Dutch tôghen, cognate with Old Saxon tōgian, Old High German zougen, Gothic 𐌰𐍄𐌰𐌿𐌲𐌾𐌰𐌽 (ataugjan), derived from Proto-Germanic *augô (“eye”). The lack of -g- may be due to Grammatischer Wechsel or later contraction. The fact that some consonant originally preceded -n- is evidenced by the High German variant zounen (with lack of pre-alveolar monophthongisation). ==== Verb ==== tonen (transitive) to show, to demonstrate Synonyms: wijzen, laten zien, vertonen, showen ===== Conjugation ===== ===== Derived terms ===== ===== Descendants ===== Afrikaans: toon Negerhollands: toon === Etymology 2 === From toon +‎ -en. ==== Verb ==== tonen (transitive) to sound, to resound ===== Conjugation ===== === Etymology 3 === See the etymology of the corresponding lemma form. ==== Noun ==== tonen plural of toon === Anagrams === noten == Middle Dutch == === Etymology === From Old Dutch *tōnen. === Verb === tônen To show To reveal, to lay bare To demonstrate, to prove. ==== Inflection ==== This verb needs an inflection-table template. ==== Descendants ==== Dutch: tonen Limburgish: toeane === Further reading === “tonen”, in Vroegmiddelnederlands Woordenboek, 2000 Verwijs, E.; Verdam, J.
