Compare archaic sjetër for the feminine singular ablative, the byform jetërsoj of tjetërsoj, and Arbëresh Albanian njatër, njetr (“another”) for standard një tjetër. The plural form të tjerë might be a remnant of an old paradigm with accent shift, as in *éter- : *(e)tér- > jetër : tjerë. Note also that i tjer is also attested as a dialectal byform for the masculine singular. Cognate of Old Church Slavonic етеръ (eterŭ, “a certain”), Latin c-ēterus (“the other one”), from *h₁e- (“this”) + *-teros.
