From timbur (“timber”) + maður (“man”). The sense ‘hangover’ is a Semantic loan from Danish tømmermænd (“a hangover”). The oldest attestation of timburmenn in the sense "hangover" in the Orðabók Háskólans is from an issue of Fjallkonan from 1891 which goes as follows:
The literal meaning of ‘carpenter’, however, is far older.
