From Old Danish tillbaghe, originally a preposition phrase with til (“to”) and the old genitive plural of bag (“back”). Compare Swedish tillbaka, Icelandic til baka, Norwegian tilbake. A similar formation, with a different noun, in German zurück, Dutch terug.
