التعريفات والمعاني

tila (“space, state”) + -inen + -uus. First attested in 1770 in the sense “state of affairs”, then in 1787 with the sense “situation”; of the current senses, “opportunity, chance” is attested since 1817, while “occasion, event, function” only became established in the early 20th century. The intermediate adjective tilainen is not directly attested, only -tilainen in e.g. archaic vähätilainen (“tight, cramped, with little space”).
=== Pronunciation ===
IPA(key): /ˈtilɑi̯suːs/, [ˈt̪ilɑ̝i̯s̠uːs̠]
Rhymes: -ilɑisuːs
Syllabification(key): ti‧lai‧suus
Hyphenation(key): ti‧lai‧suus
=== Noun ===
tilaisuus
opportunity, chance (chance for advancement, progress or profit) [with illative ‘to’; or with first infinitive ‘to do’]
occasion, event, function (special event or function)
==== Usage notes ====
Both tilaisuus and mahdollisuus may be translated as “chance”. The difference between them is sometimes subtle, but mahdollisuus tends to be used when there is considerable uncertainty about the outcome or when there are several equally good options to choose from, whereas tilaisuus is a clearer opportunity to achieve or obtain something desirable which is likely to be missed if not taken.
