tiivis

التعريفات والمعاني

== Finnish == === Alternative forms === tivis, tiivi, tivi (dialectal) === Etymology === Unknown. Possibly borrowed from Proto-Germanic *stīfaz (~ *stīfijaz?) (“stiff, rigid”) (compare other Germanic borrowings like tyyris < *diurijaz, raitis < *raidi(ja)z), implying Proto-Finnic *tiibis ~ *tiivis (without any Finnic cognates). In this case, the original sense would have been “tight, compact, solid”. However, a gradation pattern like v ~ p (with a genitive form like **tiipiin) would be expected, but such is not attested. It is possible that the gradation was levelled through the verb tiivistää, through the seemingly back-formed forms tiivi, tivi found in some dialects, or by later influence from e.g. Middle Low German stīf. === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /ˈtiːʋis/, [ˈt̪iːʋis̠] Rhymes: -iːʋis Syllabification(key): tii‧vis Hyphenation(key): tii‧vis === Adjective === tiivis (comparative tiiviimpi, superlative tiivein) dense, compact, solid Synonyms: tiheä, kiinteä Antonyms: väljä, harva tiivis puu ― solid wood tiivis aine ― condensed matter dense, thick, crowded, packed Synonyms: taaja, tiheä, tiuha Antonyms: harva, harsu tiivis verkko ― dense net tight (that cannot be penetrated) tiivis katto ― (water)tight roof (figuratively) close, tight (intimate, close-knit) tiivis yhteistyö ― close cooperation (figuratively) compact, concise Synonym: ytimekäs Antonym: väljä (figuratively) intensive, highly concentrated tiivis opiskelu ― intensive studying ==== Declension ==== ==== Derived terms ==== ==== Descendants ==== → Estonian: (dialectal) tiiv, (learned) tiivis → Sami: Northern Sami: divas Inari Sami: tivis === References === === Further reading === “tiivis”, in Kielitoimiston sanakirja [Dictionary of Contemporary Finnish]‎[2] (in Finnish) (online dictionary, continuously updated), Kotimaisten kielten keskuksen verkkojulkaisuja 35, Helsinki: Kotimaisten kielten tutkimuskeskus (Institute for the Languages of Finland), 2004–, retrieved 3 July 2023 === Anagrams === viitsi
