From earlier *teisus, Proto-Balto-Slavic *teišus, and related to Old Prussian teisi (“honor”), Old Prussian teisingi (“worth”), Proto-Slavic *tixъ (“calm, still”).
By surface analysis, a nominal derivative of tei̇̃sti (“to judge, jury”).
