Inherited from Ottoman Turkish دیدركین (dedirgin), from Old Anatolian Turkish ددرکون (dedürgün), ultimately from Proto-Turkic *tet- (“to strive, exert; bold, hero; clever, reasonable; cheerful, vigorous”), whence also tetik (“vigilant, alert”) and didin- (“to strive”).
Cognate with Azerbaijani didərgin and akin to the borrowed Armenian դադարգյուն (dadargyun).
