Inherited from Medieval Tashelhit تَمَزِيرت (tamazirt, “country, land”), from Proto-Berber *ta-m-azir-t (“country, land”), possibly the feminine active participle of *z-r (“to protect”) (whence Zenaga yäẕ̌ār (“to protect”).
Cognate with Senhaja de Srair, Central Atlas Tamazight, and Ghomara tamazirt (“land, country”).
