From the verb 𒈠𒃻𒈝 (ma-ša₂-lum, “to be(come) equal”). Cognate with Arabic تِمْثَال (timṯāl). Compare also Arabic مِثَال (miṯāl) and and Biblical Hebrew מָשָׁל (mɔšɔ́l).
