Talviuni and talvihorros are treated as synonyms by many speakers. In more specific usage talvihorros refers to a deep slumber in which the body temperature of the hibernating animal drops close to 0°C (e.g. with hedgehogs and bats) in order to minimize the consumption of energy. In the case of talviuni the temperature falls less, e.g. with the brown bear to 33°C from the normal 37°C.
