From Proto-Polynesian *tahina (“younger sibling of same sex”), from Proto-Central Pacific *tahina, from Proto-Oceanic *taci- (“younger sibling of the same sex”), from Proto-Eastern Malayo-Polynesian *taji, from Proto-Central-Eastern Malayo-Polynesian *taji, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *taji, reduced from *ta-huaji, prefixed from *huaji (“younger sibling”). Cognates include Hawaiian kaina, Tahitian teina, Tongan tehina and Samoan tei. Doublet of teina.
