From Ottoman Turkish تومان (“ten thousand; a division”), cognate with Old Turkic 𐱅𐰇𐰢𐰤 (t²ümn², “ten thousand”), ultimately from Proto-Turkic *tümen (“ten thousand”). Compare Mongolian түм (tüm) and Azerbaijani tümən.
