From Middle High German tæpisch, from tāpe (“paw”), from Proto-Germanic *dēbban-, probably related to *dappōn, *dabbōn (“to beat”), itself likely related to the root of English dab (“to press against”), which could be imitative or from a Proto-Indo-European *dʰabʰ- (“to astonish”), see also Ancient Greek τάφος (táphos, “surprise, astonishment”), Lithuanian dobti (“to smash”), Proto-Germanic *dōbnaną (“to become numb”).
