From Proto-Finno-Ugric *śorɜ (“narrow”) + -dok (noun-forming suffix). The szur- stem is a variant of szor- found in the verbs szorít (“to press, grip, pinch, urge”), szorong (“to be crowded together, stressed, anxious”), etc.
