Borrowed from a Slavic (probably South Slavic) language, from Proto-Slavic *sъvolkъ (compare Serbo-Croatian сла̑к / slȃk (“bindweed”), Slovene slak (“bindweed”), Czech svlak (“bindweed”) (dialectal), Bulgarian съвлак (sǎvlak, “bindweed”) (dialectal)). Related to iszalag (“clematis”) through semantic split. First attested in 1533.
