=== Etymology ===
An obscured compound. The first half is from Proto-Finno-Ugric *śoma- (“hunger, thirst”). The second half is juh - internal organ, stomach. It may have originally been a noun meaning thirsty stomach. The noun developed into an adjective over time. Cognate to Udmurt сюмэм (śumem, “hungry”).
