From Proto-Finno-Ugric *śarɜ- (“dry; to become dry”) + -z (obsolete noun-forming suffix). Cognate with Northern Khanty сорты (sorty, “to dry”), сорәм (sorəm, “dry, dried out”), and Eastern Khanty сорта (sorta, “to dry”).
