From a regionally attested sund (“supervision, seizure, capture, reign, protection”). Borrowed from a South Slavic language, compare Old Church Slavonic сѫдъ (sǫdŭ) ("trial, court") and Serbo-Croatian suditi; ultimately from Proto-Slavic *sǫdi (“judge”). Doublet of sodit.
