From sultan + -ate (suffix forming nouns denoting offices or ranks, or the charges or contexts of these). Sultan is borrowed from Middle French sultan or from its etymon Medieval Latin sultanus, from Arabic سُلْطَان (sulṭān, “authority; dominion, rule; power, strength”) (from the Arabic root س ل ط (“related to power”); possibly through from Ottoman Turkish سلطان (sultan)).
