Borrowed from Old East Slavic страдати (stradati, “to strive; to work hard; to suffer”); cf. Russian страда́ть (stradátʹ, “to suffer”), also dialectal страда́ (stradá, “time of hard (farm) work; hard (farm) work”). This loanword is first mentioned in 17th-century dictionaries.
